Cluny Hill, Forres

Cluny Hill Golf Club.  Instituted 1903.  A 9-hole course in the grounds of the Hydropathic, laid out by James Braid.

 

   Extended to 18 holes by Willie Park in 1911.

 

   James Braid was brought back in 1923 to make further improvements.

      An excellent inland course with beautiful surroundings, and climate said to be the best in Scotland.  With few exceptions, golf can be played all year round.  (WWG 1907)

      In 1944 Sir Robert McVitie Grant purchased the Course from the Cluny Hotel and gifted it to the people of Forres, when it was renamed Forres Golf Club.

Harry Ward is a respected golf historian known for his detailed research into the origins and development of the game, particularly in Scotland. His work explores the early courses, players, and traditions that shaped modern golf, bringing to life the stories behind iconic venues and figures. Through careful study and a passion for the sport’s heritage, he helps preserve golf’s rich history for future generations.
