Cullivo, Yell

Cullivo Golf Courses. First mention 1896. “There are several other places in Shetland where golf can be enjoyed. There is a course at Baltasound, in Unst, and two excellent courses near Cullivoe, in North Yell.” (ST 30.5.1896 and included in an article in the Golfer, 20 5.1896, on  golf in Shetland.)

“Saturday being a perfect day for golfing, the second annual match between the married and single golfers of the district was played over the local course. At the completion of the first round the benedicts were found to be leading by five holes, and continuing this victorious career in the second round they finally beat the bachelors on the day’s play by no less than 10 holes.”    (ST 16.7.1904)

Harry Ward is a respected golf historian known for his detailed research into the origins and development of the game, particularly in Scotland. His work explores the early courses, players, and traditions that shaped modern golf, bringing to life the stories behind iconic venues and figures. Through careful study and a passion for the sport’s heritage, he helps preserve golf’s rich history for future generations.

All of this work is independently funded out of his own pocket. If you value preserving golf’s history and would like to support his ongoing research, any contribution—no matter how small—would be greatly appreciated.
