Earlsferry Abbey Golfing Society

Earlsferry Abbey Golfing Society. Formed 1830. “This ancient, healthy, and truly Scottish game, once the chief amusement of this and the neighbouring towns, has again been revived in our neighbourhood. Twelve months ago, a few gentlemen, anxious to promote and encourage the practice of this manly pastime, formed themselves into a society under the designation of the “Earlsferry Abbey Golfing Society.” The club is now numerous and respectable; and it is truly gratifying to see our ancient golfing green, lately lonely and deserted, covered with golfers in their scarlet jackets, keenly engaged in this health-promoting sport.” (FH 26.8.1831)

It is most likely that this was the precursor to Elie and Earlsferry Golf Club

Harry Ward is a respected golf historian known for his detailed research into the origins and development of the game, particularly in Scotland. His work explores the early courses, players, and traditions that shaped modern golf, bringing to life the stories behind iconic venues and figures. Through careful study and a passion for the sport’s heritage, he helps preserve golf’s rich history for future generations.

All of this work is independently funded out of his own pocket. If you value preserving golf’s history and would like to support his ongoing research, any contribution—no matter how small—would be greatly appreciated.
